That same year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that 3,802 people were killed in large truck accidents, and approximately 194 of those occurred in Florida.<\/p>\n<p>Despite federal laws that are designed to regulate truck drivers, trucking companies and the safety of commercial vehicles, the FMCSA stated that 171,150 truck drivers had too many violations and were taken out of service as a result. More than 2.1 million tractor trailers were removed from service after they were found to have had too many safety violations.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"New_Safety_Technology\"><\/span>New Safety Technology<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Although new commercial truck safety technology may help to reduce the number of injuries and deaths that are caused by tractor trailers each year, only 10 percent of tractor trailers currently have active safety technology, according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.trucking.org\/\">American Trucking Association<\/a>. NBC News explains that just because a truck is equipped with safety technology does not mean that it will work properly. Safety technology malfunction is a common cause of commercial vehicle accidents in America.<\/p>\n<p>The high-profile truck accident that severely injured famous comedian and actor Tracy Morgan and killed fellow comedian Jimmy Mack was caused by a tractor trailer that was equipped with the latest safety technology, including an automatic braking system, interactive cruise control and forward-looking radar, according to NJ.com. The computer installed in the truck was designed to alert the driver of slowing traffic and, when working properly, had the ability to automatically adjust the speed of the truck according to the flow of traffic.
